the most expensive performance in art history
The
legal dispute (toywar) between the net activists
etoy and toy sellers etoys became a
cause celebre in 1999/2000. Support for etoy came from many quarters including
John Perry Barlow at the
Electronic Frontier Foundation.
Window Shopper, was a DDoS-like client, developed during the toywar protest, which would shop at etoys.
It created a number of customers, each with their own varying speeds of connection and indecision, each building up
their own shopping trolley. The inclusion of SSL code allowed shopping to continue to the checkout.
A
SETI like screen saver showing a search for intelligent life on earth ... in a supermarket ...
at etoys.com, was in development just as the
toywar settlement was announced.
